The Laws

Hammurabi, king of Babylon, made the first set of written laws in order to unite the Babylonian empire in Mesopitamia. He called his laws the Code of Hammurabi. Hammurabi did not come up with these laws, they were around since the time of the Sumerians, but he wrote them down. By writing and enforcing these laws, he established a governmental force that everyone followed, making the government stronger and more powerful. According to Hammurabi, his goals were to cause justice to prevail in the land, to destroy the wicked and evil, and that the strong may not oppress the weak.

Hammurabi also created official punnishment. Before the Code of Hammurabi, the family of the victim would make the punishment to the criminal. Hammurabi’s punishment was like the quote:” an eye for an eye and a life for a life”. If someone was murdered, the murderer would be killed. The Code of Hammurabi protected weaker people, like women and slaves. If a woman was mistreated by her husband she could divorce her husband, if the city concil found the husband guilty.
